New York Knicks snag former Magruder player

Montgomery County product James White has agreed to a one-year deal with the New York Knicks.

The deal with New York is reportedly worth about $850, 000 and won’t be made official until July 11th.

The former Magruder junior varsity player and Newport School standout is back in the NBA after spending the past two years playing overseas in an elite Italian professional basketball league.

“I think he can help New York be a contender,” said former Newport School head coach Chris Chaney.

The Portland Trailblazers selected White in the second round of the 2006 NBA Draft with the 31st overall pick. However, his draft rights were traded to the Indiana Pacers where he played eight preseason games before he was released.

He was picked up by the San Antonio Spurs and signed a two-year contract with the NBA team.

“He did win a championship [in San Antonio],” said Chaney, “but I think his role will be a lot bigger with New York.”

During his tenure in San Antonio, White also played with the Austin Toros, the Spurs’ NBA Development League team. He also played briefly with the Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets in addition to playing with various teams overseas.

White began his collegiate career at the University of Florida where he averaged six points and three rebounds per game while helping to lead the Gators to a 22-9 record during his freshman campaign.

After transferring from Florida, White spent three years at the University of Cincinnati where he averaged 16 points, five rebounds and two assists during his senior campaign.

The athletic 6-foot-7 forward, a Derwood native, earned the nickname ‘Flight’ White due to his acrobatic dunks. He’s also a well-traveled journeyman who has played with various professional teams since first entering the NBA six years ago.

“He’s one of those guys that cares about winning,” said Chaney. “Guys like James White are the type of guys that can help you win a championship.”
