SUE’S REVIEWS: FANTASTIC FOUR
“Fantastic Four” is a 106 minute PG-13 Rated Superhero/Science Fiction directed by Josh Trank starring Miles Teller (Reed Richards), Kate Mara (Sue Storm), Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm/The Human Torch), Jamie Bell (Ben Grimm/The Thing), Toby Kebbell (Victor Von Doom/Dr. Doom) and Tim Blake Nelson (Dr. Allen).
“Fantastic Four” is a Marvel Comics film based on the superheroes of the same name. It is the 3rd installment in the franchise (2005, 2007 and 2015) and a reboot of the original story. The movie opens in 2007 with boy- genius Reed Richards teaming up with his friend Ben Grimm to create a teleporter. It fast forwards 7 years later when they enter their invention in a science fair and get the attention of a technology company which provides them the resources to continue with their teleporter. Reed, Johnny, Ben and Victor go rogue and teleport themselves to another dimension where they each undergo tremendous physical transformations and the acquisition of incredible powers. Three of them return to earth and, along with Sue Storm (who has been affected in the laboratory by their incident), work together as a team, using their powers constructively to defeat a former-friend-turned-enemy.
This movie has received some of the most negative pre-release “buzz” and reviews of any all year and most of it is justified. The first 75 minutes are slow-moving and boring with mediocre acting and vapid dialogue which is due more to the script than to the actors’ talents. There are very few action scenes and the special effects are underwhelming until the last half-hour which picks up the pace and is more exciting and entertaining. The transformation of the fantastic four characters is the best part of the movie and saves it from being a complete disaster. “Fantastic Four” is the worst Marvel Comics movie I have seen but I think superhero fans will still marvel at the film and enjoy it. I give it a 5.0 on the ABBONDANZOMETER (Scale of 1-10).
