MONTGOMERY VILLAGE - Defending Maryland 4A state baseball champion Northwest High School picked up right where it left off last year with a pair of wins to start the season.
After a comeback win on Thursday against Churchill, Northwest had no problem with Watkins Mill on Friday, earning a mercy-rule victory with after leading 13-0 thru five innings. Sophomore Joseph Brauch notched the win with three innings pitched and two strikeouts.
POTOMAC – The Heights School Cavaliers pulled out a 4-3 victory in eight innings Wednesday against archrival Avalon after squandering a two-run lead in the seventh inning.
Junior Joe Bruchalski came out of the bullpen to pick up the win, and he also had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning. Bruchalski finished the game 2-4 with a run scored. Junior Matt McCreary started the game and pitched four innings giving up four hits, one run, three walks and striking out three batters. McCreary also chipped in offensively by scoring the game-winning run, going 2-3 at the plate and driving in a run.
