Pair of Good Counsel hoops players transfer

basketballhoopsFormer Good Counsel teammates Byron Hawkins and Trevor Brown have enrolled at Wise in Upper Marlboro and plan to suit up for the Pumas’ basketball team this year.

Wise head coach Rob Garner confirmed the pair’s transfer last week.

Brown, a 6-foot-5 forward, has received some Division I interest according to Garner.

“I think he’ll definitely have Division I opportunity,” said Garner.

Meanwhile, Hawkins, a 6-foot-1 point guard, spent two seasons at Good Counsel where he earned first team All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and All-Sentinel honors during his tenure.

Hawkins led Good Counsel to a 12-18 overall record including a 6-12 mark in the WCAC last season. He scored in double figures in every game and averaged a team-high 18.1 points per game. He scored a season-high 33 points in Good Counsel’s 79-64 victory over Roswell in December.

This marks the second time in his high school career that Hawkins will be switching schools. The Prince George’s County native spent his freshman campaign at Friendly High in Fort Washington where ironically he was coached by Garner.

“As a freshman he had a huge role for us,” said Garner, who noted the Patriots compiled a 23-game winning-streak and captured both county and region championships. “Byron had a huge part of that success that year. I know him very well.”

Hawkins, who plays AAU basketball for D.C. Assault, holds various Division I offers including Delaware, Fairfield, George Mason, George Washington and Towson among others.

Garner said he had no idea that Hawkins would be attending Wise until the two crossed paths during the first week of classes.

“What a great present to have to start the school year off,” said Garner.
