Gaithersburg coach steps down

basketballhoopsAfter nearly a decade at the helm of the Gaithersburg High School boys’ basketball program, Kevin Parrish has decided to step down.

Parrish, a Silver Spring native who resides in Howard County, said he wants to devote more time to his family.

“I don’t want to get out of coaching,” said Parrish who guided the Trojans to a 6-17 record during this past season, “but I just want to be closer to home.”

Parrish, a math teacher, spent three years as the Trojans junior varsity head coach before taking over the varsity program in 2004.

Gaithersburg returns a pair of talented student-athletes in Zach Coalman and Anthony Tarke next season.

“Whoever comes in and takes over the job has a pretty good situation they’re walking into,” said Parrish.

Sherwood basketball coach resigns

basketballhoopsSherwood High School is searching for a new boys head basketball coach following the departure of Dondrell Whitmore who resigned on Tuesday according to Athletic Director Kathy Green.

The school has placed an advertisement on the MCPS Careers website and is accepting applications for Whitmore’s replacement.

Whitmore, a North Carolina native, spent seven years at the helm of the Sandy Spring public school’s basketball program and captured a state championship in his first season, guiding the Warriors to the Class 4A title over archrival Magruder during the 2006-2007 campaign.

Whitmore’s departure marks the second straight year the Sherwood athletic program has lost a varsity basketball coach. Sandi Williams resigned last year as the school’s girls head basketball coach after a decade at the helm and was replaced by Kenny Prather who ironically has also served as a boys assistant under Whitmore in the past.
