SANDY SPRING – During his playing days in the National Football League, Steve Atwater was known as a ferocious hitter who toiled at free safety for the Denver Broncos.
Atwater enjoyed an illustrious career in professional football, earning eight Pro Bowl selections and two Super Bowl rings in twelve seasons.
In November, Atwater was among 25 semifinalists selected to be considered for pro football’s greatest individual honor – the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.
During the past season, Atwater roamed the sidelines at Sherwood’s Caruso Memorial Stadium on game nights where he served as the Warriors defensive backs coach. Atwater’s son, Paris, a senior, was a linebacker and running back for the Warriors.
GAITHERSBURG - The Northwest Jaguars will play Suitland at Raven's stadium this Friday for the state 4-A football championship after knocking off Paint Branch 55-36.
Sophomore quarterback Mark Pierce and wide receiver Matt Watson paved the way for the Jaguars while Johnny Littlejohn was a standout for the Panthers in a losing effort.
