Good Counsel opens with Gilman

Good Counsel opens the 2013 football campaign Friday night with a nationally televised contest against Gilman.

Johnny Unitas Stadium on the Towson University campus is the site of Friday’s game between two of the state’s top-ranked teams.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on ESPNEWS.

Churchill's leading rusher transfers

One of Montgomery County’s leading rushers from last season will not be returning to help his team compete for a Maryland state championship in 2013.

Malik Harris, a two-sport star at Churchill, has left the Potomac public school and enrolled at Friendship Collegiate Academy in Washington, D.C. where he is expected to start at linebacker for the public charter school’s nationally renown football team.

For two players at Avalon last time around is best

Isaac BoydGAITHERSBURG - Most high school players are lucky if they play with their teammates for two or three years at most. The lucky few will play together for four years. But for two teammates at The Avalon School, this year will be the end of a 10-year run.

Seniors Isaac Boyd, slated to be the Black Knights starting running back, and Wyatt Karem, the four-year starting quarterback have been playing football together since they were seven-years-old.

Good Counsel rising senior commits

Good Counsel rising senior Leo Ekwoge has verbally committed to play college football at Western Michigan University.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound running back said he chose Western Michigan over offers from Ohio, Old Dominion, Toledo and Miami (OH) because the Mid-American Conference program is “on the rise.”

“Their recruiting class is rated number 25 – that’s crazy,” Ekwoge said about the Football Bowl Subdivision program that saw seven high school student-athletes commit last week alone.

Ekwoge made an unofficial visit to the Western Michigan campus last Thursday before verbally committing the next day.

“The visit was great,” said Ekwoge. “It was much better than I expected.”
