Local player commits to Baylor

Gaithersburg native Jarell Broxton has verbally committed to play college football at Baylor.

Broxton, a 6-foot-6, 325-pound offensive lineman from Lackawanna College, chose the Big 12 Conference school over offers from Arizona State, Florida Atlantic, Syracuse, UCLA and Wisconsin.

Summer passing league in full swing

Summer is in the air, and so is football.

It may still be too early for the preseason, but it is time for summer passing leagues around the county. Summer passing league is a seven-on-seven scrimmage with no contact, no pads and no run plays.

Jelani Jenkins drafted by Miami

SILVER SPRING – Dozens of well-wishers packed into the lobby at the Sheraton Hotel on Georgia Avenue Sunday to congratulate Jelani Jenkins.

The Good Counsel graduate made history on Saturday when the Miami Dolphins selected the Montgomery County product early in the fourth round.

Football participation falls across the state

COLLEGE PARK - When the undefeated St. Frances Academy football team prepared to play Friends School of Baltimore last October, they didn’t expect to win without playing.
 
But that’s exactly what happened when Friends was forced to forfeit after showing up with only 13 players.
 
“I was very surprised,” said Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association Executive Director Rick Diggs of the forfeits. “I’ve been director for 20 years and I can’t remember the last forfeit.”

Sherwood names new coach

Sherwood graduate Chris Grier has been hired to take over the football program at his alma mater.

Grier, the DeMatha freshman head coach since 2011, replaces Mike Bonavia who resigned last month to accept an administrative position at Einstein.

The Olney native began his coaching career in 2007 as the varsity offensive line coach and junior varsity head coach at Herricks High School in Long Island, New York.

Grier, a two-year letterman at Sherwood who played offensive and defensive line for current Good Counsel head coach Bob Milloy, graduated from West Virginia University in 2005 with a degree in Athletic Coaching Education.
