Wootton begins LAX season with a win

ROCKVILLE - The Wootton High School boys’ lacrosse team defeated Sherwood High School 9-4 at home Thursday night in a matchup of teams expected to be contenders for a state title this season.

A trio of underclassmen led the way for Wootton. Sophomore attacker Myles Romm scored a game-high three goals and junior attacker Jake Mitchell scored a goal to go along with three assists. Junior midfielder Matt Saltzman chipped in with two goals. Senior goalie and team captain Matt Hoy made eight saves.

“It always feels good to start off on a positive,” Wootton head coach Colin Thomson said. “We want to get better each game and it’s great for us to come out like we did. We did what we had to do, but there are still things we need to work on.”

Wootton got off to a 2-0 lead, but Sherwood scored two goals in a 25-second span with two minutes remaining in the quarter to tie the game. Wootton outscored Sherwood 3-0 in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 5-2 lead. Sherwood cut the lead to 5-3 with under eight minutes to go in the third quarter, but Wootton would score the next three goals, including two in a seven-second span, to take control of the game with a 8-3 lead.

All night long Wootton dominated possession by spreading the offense out and passionately picking the Sherwood defense apart. Wootton also dominated in face-offs, losing only two in the entire game.

“We changed up our offense from last year so it’s more of a possession game,” Mitchell said. “We were able to control the tempo, pick our spots and execute.”

Wootton’s next game is against Gonzaga College High School on Saturday. Sherwood will look to notch its first win of the season when the team plays host to Whitman on Saturday.
