Sheahin back in coach ranks while Herron heads to Rutgers

IMG 84522After a year-long hiatus, Tom Sheahin is back in the coaching game.

The former Seneca Valley skipper has been named the new boys head basketball coach at Gaithersburg High School. He resigned from Seneca Valley last year and was replaced by Tony Harrison. The Screaming Eagles finished 0-21 last season.

Sheahin, a Seneca Valley graduate, takes over for Kevin Parrish who stepped down last month after nine seasons at the helm.

Sheahin inherits a team that finished 6-17 last season but returns a pair of talented student-athletes in Zach Coalman and Anthony Tarke.

The 1984 Seneca Valley graduate guided the Screaming Eagles to a pair of state semifinal appearances during a seven-year stint at the Germantown public school where he compiled a 117-61 record.

 Rutgers gets Bullis lineman

Rutgers has landed a verbal pledge from Bullis offensive lineman Justin Herron.

The Silver Spring native committed to the Scarlet Knights on Thursday during an unofficial visit to the New Jersey campus.

Herron, who earned first team All-Interstate Athletic Conference honors last season, also holds offers from Boston College, Villanova and Old Dominion.

Herron, a 6-foot-5, 285-pound junior, said he was drawn to the school’s strong academic standing in their business program.

“The academic support is unbelievable,” said Herron, who boasts a 3.6 grade point average and plans to major in business finance. “The business school is top 25.”

Herron noted the Scarlet Knights boast five coaches that played in the National Football League. The fact that Rutgers is also moving from the Big East Conference to the Big Ten in 2014 also played a part in Herron’s decision along with the school’s proximity to Wall Street.

“It just had a family feel to it,” said Herron. “A real family feel to it.”
