What Do You Think?

It's Sherwood again!

baseballbatngloveCOLLEGE PARK – The Sherwood softball team captured its second straight state championship Saturday with a 5-0 victory over Glen Burnie at the University of Maryland’s Robert E. Taylor Stadium.

The Warriors scored three runs in the first inning and junior pitcher Meggie Dejter tossed a four-hitter with ten strikeouts to lead the Sandy Spring public school to its 42nd consecutive win dating to last season. Sherwood senior Megan McDonough went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple and three RBI.

“When my team went up and just rallied, got those three runs right off the bat it was literally the best feeling,” said Dejter, “because I could go out there all calm and throw my game and not have to worry about anything.”

The win also marked the second straight year Sherwood had beaten a team from Anne Arundel County to capture the state title. Sherwood beat Chesapeake in last year’s state final, 1-0.

Sherwood scored on sophomore Nicole Stockinger’s RBI single in the first inning before McDonough’s triple brought home two more runs.

Stockinger reached base in the fifth inning on a single and then stole second. She scored on McDonough’s RBI double that gave the Warriors a 4-0 advantage. Addie Ambruster later scored in the sixth inning on a Glen Burnie throwing error and Sherwood’s defense was phenomenal the entire game.

Detjer, a Villanova recruit, retired the side in the seventh inning to help Sherwood (21-0) finish the season perfect for the second straight year. The junior hurler fanned Glen Burnie’s Kayla Pleasant to end the game and then celebrated the win by hugging her catcher, Rae Harrison.

Meanwhile, Glen Burnie (16-7) failed in its bid to capture the softball program’s fourth state championship.

“Last year we were so nervous, we were so uptight and this year we came out just really strong with a lot of energy,” said Dejter.
