Big Train and Express gear up for a showdown

My how times have changed.

Last year, the Bethesda Big Train was on a ridiculous pace as they started out 8-0 and were 14-4 through 18 games. Believe it or not, the Big Train actually played the rest of their season with an even better winning percentage en route to a 33-9 record to capture their third straight Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League title and the title of “Best Summer Collegiate Baseball Team” by Perfect Game USA.

Meanwhile, the lowly Rockville Express started out 0-5 and were 7-12 through 19 games in 2011 en route a 17-24 record. They finished 15.5 games behind the Big Train in 42 games played.

Through as many games this summer the average CRCBL fan would do a double take at the standings. The Express are 13-6, holding a one game lead over the Baltimore Redbirds while the Big Train are 8-10 and that is after winning five of their last six games after a 3-9 start.

Oh, what a difference a year makes.

The Big Train has traditionally been able to play with the best talent pool in the league, like the New York Yankees in Major League Baseball, and this year is no exception, despite the dismal record. The Express, on the other hand, have been able to excel with lesser talent which makes their meeting on Friday night at Shirley Povich Field all the more enticing.

Will the tradition of Big Train success finally come around to this summer’s team or will the Express continue to hit the cover off the ball and stay near the top of the standings until the end?

While that will not be answered Friday night we can expect to find out whether or not the Big Train’s recent success is a turn of luck or a sign that they are ready to take off. We can also expect to find out whether or not the Express can continue to out-hit just about everyone or if their early season run is about to come to a sudden halt.

Who do you like in Friday’s much-anticipated matchup? To see the game for yourself head over to Shirley Povich Field at 7 p.m. Friday to see the Bethesda Big Train host the Rockville Express and for the chance to see some of the best collegiate baseball players, and potentially some future Major Leaguer’s, from all over the country play right in our backyard.
