Youngest Olympian is youngest Gold medal winner

US Olympic swimmer Katie Ledecky, a sophomore at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, won a gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle.

At 15 years old, Ledecky is the youngest member of the 2012 US Olympic team.  She also broke the US Olympic Team Trials record in the 200-meter freestyle.

The rising high school sophomore was the youngest of the 529 athletes the United States sent to the Games. She becomes the second-youngest swimming medalist in Team USA history, 77 days older than Beth Botsford, who won gold in Atlanta in 1996.
