Take this Psy!: You don't have to go Gangnam style - local boy goes viral

basketballhoopsCLARKSBURG - On January 5th two youth basketball teams were nearing the end of a hotly contested Montgomery Christian Basketball Association game that was being played at the Green Ridge Baptist Church in Clarksburg.  It had been a close game but the Redland Baptist Church team had pulled away at the end and led Damascus Road Community Church 51 – 36.

With just a few seconds left in the game Matt Demember, a fourteen year old freshman at Linganore High School, received a pass from a teammate near half-court.  With one second remaining Matt threw the ball backwards over his head and from the mid-court line the ball swished through the basket.  Luckily Gary Levine, a Gaithersburg parent who was video taping the game, captured the moment. Gary sent the clip to ESPN’s Sports Center show and then posted it on You Tube and by Wednesday the short video had been viewed over six million times.

Since the shot Matt has appeared on the Anderson Cooper show on CNN and also on the Jimmy Kimmel show.

Matt told Mocovox.com, “I had just gotten the ball and there was not enough time so I tried to get it out of my hands.  I saw it go in and just went crazy”.  He added that he has received a lot of attention at school since the event and, “kids at my lunch table have been high-fiving me”.

Matt also plays football and participates in swimming.
