Student struck by police cruiser at football game

The Montgomery County police are investigating the injury of an unidentified female student following several brawls at Watkins Mill High School after the football game Friday.

Police say eight officers had been detailed to the game, but after Watkins Mill won a slim victory over their arch rival Clarksburg, several fights broke out.

Police called officers from the fifth and sixth districts to assist with a large crowd. When one of the police cruisers turned on Apple Ridge Road, they say a young girl was struck by one of the officers.

The 15-year-old girl is a tenth grader at Watkins Mill and is reportedly in critical condition.

Fox Five news reported the girl was running in the street when she was struck by the cruiser. She was flown by helicopter from the intersection of Watkins Mill Road and Apple Ridge Road.

The girl is a sophomore at Watkins Mill, said Principal Scott Murphy.

"I would like to thank the police, fire/rescue, students, parents, staff, and community members for your swift and supportive response to this unfortunate accident," he said in a statement. "I know you join me in keeping this student and her family in your thoughts and prayers," he told Fox News.
